The uniqueness of museum learning lies in the engagement of learners - using real artefacts to motivate their learning experience.

“It’s had a huge impact on their lives. It’s been life changing for some of them.”

Culture Shock

Culture Shock is about how museums can help eradicate intolerance in this country by using a very simple treatment: understanding. The premise is very simple – identity, cohesion, citizenship and the rest are all about culture. Museums are all about culture. Suddenly they’re all about the same thing. Granted, museums have so far aimed their skills at explaining ancient and foreign cultures but they can easily use the same talents to explain modern cultures in multicultural Britain, all in the service of understanding.

We created Culture Shock with some of the leading thinkers and doers on the subject including the Runnymede Trust, the Home Office, and the Commission for Racial Equality.

We think the ideas it contains mark an eye-catching start to what could be a major impact on cultural understanding, tolerance and respect, throughout
the UK.
